Filipino Martial arts and the Modern Arnis history
Maharlika (“Maha” means Great “Likha” means creation) the original name of the Philippines (according to spiritual master Shrii Anadamurthi) before it was colonized by Spain and named after King Philip. The original Maharlikan natives are called “itas”.(small negritoes) They are hunters and warriors using both their empty hand (“dumog”), spear (“sibat”) , and bow and arrow (“pana”)..
The roots of Maharlikan martial arts are in India, China and Southeast Asia. From India came Tantric Buddhist meditation and Dasal spiritual healing. From China came Gung-fu and Quigong. And from Southeast Asia came the fighting arts Thakalele, Penjak Silat and Kuntao.
From these evolved “Kali” the original art of Maharlikan sword fighting.
One of the earliest practioners of this was Lapu-lapu, who fought successfully to repel Magellan’s invasion in the battle of Mactan in 1521.
Later, the Spanish invaders brought with them fencing and the sword and dagger, which evolved into “Escrima” in the central islands of Vizaya.
Maharlikan martial arts were banned under the Spanish colonilization. They became hidden in the Moro-moro dance and native language. For example “harness”,the strap worn by Spanish soldiers, became a code word for caution and self-defence. This code word eventually emerge into “Arnis” the modern name for Maharlikan martial arts.
One of these arts is “Sinawali” which means “weaving”.Just as traditional Maharlikan weaving protects from water, traditional “Sinawali” protects from attack. Later, under the America occupation, Western boxing was integrated into “Sinawali”, emphasizing weaving defense rather than linear attack.
When Japan invaded Maharlika in the Second World War, modern samurai brought with them a variety of martial arts, including Karate, Jujitsu and Judo. These became integrated with the best of Modern Arnis.
In 1969 Arnis-Filipino Instructor Remy Presas from Bacolod, Negros Occidental, Philippines..started his first National Amateur Karate Organization (NAKO) and Modern Arnis Federation of the Philippines (MAFP) in Manila.
Originally taught by his father and later by his teacher, Bacoon of the “Balintawak” system from Cebu in Visaya island, Remy Presas traveled to different parts of Maharlika and studied different forms native and foreign martial arts. His system was progressive and always evolving. He named and created “Modern Arnis” and became Grandmaster. Naraphil was changed to Arnis Philippines.and International Arnis Federation (This become the Philippine Government body of Arnis in Maharlika) This was established to promote, uplift and unite Maharlika Martial arts in the nation and thru- out he world.
Raymond Velayo became Arnis Philippines President and Roland Dantes the Vice-president and Master Shishir becomes VP for North America.
Remy Presas became the Chairman for International Affairs and Shishir Inocalla his Vice-Chairman and VP in North America. Shishir Inocalla became the first Modern Arnis “Datu” (Master instructor) and was appointed President of Modern Arnis in Canada. He went on to become President and Director of Modern Arnis Phil.
